RADI is a women’s education project that extends from the organization’s established leadership development programs, and provides educational opportunities to underrepresented women in San Jose, Costa Rica. Women who have completed the program will then become a part of the following program, as leaders and mentors. In this way, a sustainable model is built from and maintained by the community itself. However, work still needs to be done in Costa Rica to achieve gender equality. In 2018, 7.2% of women aged years reported that they had https://rpfdn.com/norwegian-women/ been subject to physical and/or sexual violence by a current or former intimate partner in the previous 12 months. Also, women and girls aged 10+ spend 23.5% of their time on unpaid care and domestic work, compared to 8.2% spent by men.
For them, the woman that features in their legends is one that represents the worst sides of human nature. They seek to educate through fear by telling stories of people who come to an ugly end after being morally compromised. They tell us what they value, what they fear, and what they believe is the essence of our existence.
The indigenous people of Costa Rica have their own version of the Pachamama. One of the most notable tribes that still populates Costa Rica’s Talamanca mountain ranges, is the BriBri. Next to having a matrilineal clan system, the BriBri mythology is also strongly defined by the legend of La Niña Tierra – or Iriria in BriBri. Under this instrument, female entrepreneurs are able to access USD$800 to USD$16,000 credits, with an interest rate between 8% and 15% per year. At the height of COVID-19-related lockdowns in Costa Rica, Elizabeth Ramirez Gonzalez and Andrea Rojas Cruz, both out of work, decided to do an online course on organic cosmetics.
Each of the RADI women expressed the difficulties of pursuing an education while being a mother and a wife. In March 2017, WECO went to San Jose, Costa Rica to visit RADI, a women’s empowerment initiative that provides women with the means of achieving a high school education and subsequent job placement assistance. The strength of the program stems from its work over several years with young people, supporting them to build greater self-esteem and self-confidence, and making them try new things that they can be passionate about. In the case of Yoselín, the foundation was instrumental in giving her the tools to expand her interest in electronics.
I was surprised at how much more attractive the women were compared to their profile pictures. The social was a great opportunity to meet women I would not have chosen from their profile.
Different regions of the country will have different versions of this legend. Sometimes women can turn into a tapir or even a pig, like in the story mentioned below. Even though the legend originated from the Chorotega traditions, it is still given immense credit to this day, especially in the more rural areas of Costa Rica. The indigenous legend merged with the morality the Spanish settlers wanted to communicate in their stories and created an even darker canon. After their visit to the UN, Yoselín and Guissell started a project that uses technology to promote rural development, which they are currently working on. “At the UN I was really shocked at how much we as women in technology can do to help the planet, which needs it so much. What I want to do to work to create a better future, something that can help my community and the future of each one of us,” says Guissell. The project she created is an ode to her love for technology and the desire that more people, especially boys and girls who like her were never exposed to this field, discover their own passion for building and designing things. It consists of an interactive story to explain how pixels work through a story of an alien’s encounter with an astronaut.
